Coronary artery disease (CAD) is also known as atherosclerotic heart disease, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, or ischemic heart disease (IHD). It is the leading cause of death in the world today which is a startling statistic in itself. Causes of the disease range from lifestyle choices (smoking, poor diet etc.) to hereditary issues.
Coronary heart disease is a disease where a waxy substance called plaque builds up inside the arteries. These arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart. When plaque continues to build up in the arteries, the condition is called atherosclerosis .This build up of plaque can occur over many number of years.
This info-graphic looks at the disease and explains how it attacks the coronary area. It aims to show the extent of the problem around the world with some statistical information and charts the main causes and possible treatments available for this serious global health problem.
